Digital Accessibility
In light of the pandemic, we rely on technology more than ever. It’s almost impossible to avoid using our phones or laptops to complete necessary tasks. Yet, for so many, a lot of technology is simply inaccessible. Unfortunately, people with disabilities are most commonly impacted by this. Digital inaccessibility can affect so much, from using a bank account to shopping for essentials.
So, how do people with disabilities get around inaccessible tech for unavoidable tasks? Well, quite simply, a lot of them are not able to. Disability affects over one billion people worldwide. Excluding this many people from digital content is not only immoral, but bad business. It’s a massive audience that you cannot afford to ignore. Similarly, people with disabilities can no longer afford to be excluded from digital spaces in a world that relies on tech. Digital accessibility is the only way forward.
A lot of the time, inaccessible content is not intentional. It’s just due to a lack of knowledge. It can be difficult to know where to begin. Particularly, because different disabilities have different suggestions which often contradict one another. Before you begin, it’s important to know that it’s not possible to make digital content that’s 100% suited to everyone’s needs. However, by following the suggestions from our Digital Accessibility Guides, you can make content that’s at least accessible to everyone. Which is the most important thing.
Our Digital Accessibility Guides are aimed at web and app developers looking to make tech that can be used and enjoyed by everyone – regardless of their abilities and disabilities. Our guides are categorized by the type of disability that the suggestions are tailored towards.
