Scanning sites SortSite Desktop Manual

To scan a site:

  • Navigate to your site using the address bar
  • Click Start Check in the side bar
  • Your site report is displayed once the scan finishes

It’s best to start off with a small site before scanning large sites.

SortSite scans sites by following links on each page it scans to find new pages to scan. It’s like clicking on every link on a page to find new pages, then clicking on all the links on the found pages.

Choose which pages are scanned

The scope of the scan is controlled by the radio buttons in the side bar:

  • Entire site scans all pages on the starting domain. When scanning from https://www.example.com all pages on https://www.example.com are scanned, but not pages on https://store.example.com or other domains like google.com.
  • Current folder scans pages in the current virtual directory, reachable by links from pages within that virtual directory. When scanning from https://www.example.com/company pages with the url prefix https://www.example.com/company are scanned, but not https://www.example.com/ or pages in https://www.example.com/help, and links to https://www.example.com/company from pages outside it are ignored.
  • Current page scans the current page and any resources used by the page (CSS, scripts, images, fonts) but doesn’t check for broken links.
  • Page and links as the current page option, but also checks for broken links to other pages. This can be slow if a page contains hundreds of outbound links.

If you need to check pages that cannot be reached by clicking internal links, such as landing pages for online advertising, then:

  1. Navigate to your site using the address bar
  2. Click Check… from the Check menu
  3. Enter a list of landing pages in the Additional Pages box
  4. Choose which pages to scan (Site or Folder), then click the Check button

If you need to scan additional domains as part of the same scan see including other domains in the scan.

Sites with a password

Navigate to the login page, enter the username and password to login, then click Start Check in the side bar. If the logged in site has a Logout link you may need to block it to prevent a log out during scanning. See scanning sites with a password.
